Townsend was warming up before a match at Pattani on Saturday when a member of staff appeared to lose control of a heavy pitch roller. Townsend’s left leg briefly got stuck under the vehicle, but he was unhurt. He came off the bench late on in a 3-0 win. Townsend, who won 13 caps for England, made light of the incident on Instagram, referencing one of his recent posts in which he compared a sun-drenched Thai away trip with previous visits to Stoke’s Bet365 Stadium.

Townsend joined Thai outfit PT Prachuap from Kanchanaburi Power just last month and was preparing for the side’s top-flight match with Pattani on Saturday when the shocking incident occurred. The 35-year-old, who won 13 caps for the Three Lions, was warming up with his team-mates at the time and appeared oblivious to the slow-moving vehicle approaching him from the touchline at Pattani Province Stadium.
There was a look of sheer horror on the faces of those Prachuap players in the immediate vicinity, with Townsend’s left leg caught awkwardly between the giant roller and the turf. The driver in question immediately leaped from his seat and screams can be heard in the audio of the footage, before Townsend was somehow able to get back to his feet and hobble away from the scene. Incredibly, the veteran winger went on to feature in the match, coming off the bench to replace Jesper Nyholm in stoppage time to help the visiting Prachuap emerge with a 3-0 victory.
Townsend was even able to see the funny side in the aftermath of Prachuap’s win, taking to Instagram to laugh off the episode while seemingly confirming that he was unhurt. Re-sharing one of his previous posts entitled ‘WTF is Stoke away?’, Townsend wrote: ‘Turns out Stoke away wasn’t so bad after all.’ He then reposted a video of the incident overlaid with the caption: ‘Just another day in Thai football (He was fine!)’.
Prachuap’s win this weekend saw the club move level on points at the top of the table alongside Uthai Thani, Rayong, Port FC and Ayutthaya United after three games.

Malgré la violence de la séquence, l’attaquant du PT Prachuap a été jugé apte et a même participé au match en entrant en jeu en fin de rencontre, remplaçant Jesper Nyholm dans le temps additionnel. Cette apparition tardive a permis au club visiteur de sceller un succès net sur le score de 3-0.
Grâce à ce résultat positif acquis lors de la troisième journée du championnat, le PT Prachuap rejoint le groupe de tête du classement de Thai League 1, aux côtés d’Uthai Thani, de Rayong, du Port FC et d’Ayutthaya United. Plutôt que de céder à la panique, le joueur a rapidement tenu à rassurer ses abonnés et à ironiser sur la situation via son compte Instagram. Il a ainsi partagé une publication dans laquelle il compare ses conditions de jeu actuelles avec ses souvenirs de la Premier League anglaise.
