Measures capping gas at $12 a gigajoule for 12 months began after being signed off by the acting treasurer, Katy Gallagher, overnight. Le cyclone tropical Ellie touche terre dans le Territoire du Nord
Le cyclone tropical Ellie a touché terre dans une zone peu peuplée de l’embouchure de la rivière Daly dans le Territoire du Nord.
Des rafales allant jusqu’à 110 km par heure se produisent entre l’embouchure de la rivière Daly au sud jusqu’à Wadeye et l’intérieur des terres jusqu’à Peppimenarti dans la région proche de la mer de Timor.
La tempête de catégorie 1 a traversé la côte à 23 heures CST et se déplace vers le sud sur la terre, provoquant des vents soutenus et de fortes pluies.
Des coups de vent avec des rafales allant jusqu’à 90 km/h peuvent également se développer au sud de Wadeye jusqu’à la frontière entre le Territoire du Nord et l’Australie occidentale dans la matinée.
Un communiqué publié par le Bureau de météorologie a déclaré que les zones côtières basses pourraient subir des inondations mineures et que les marées seraient plus élevées que la normale entre Dundee Beach et Wyndham.
Il est conseillé aux résidents de Wadeye de vérifier leurs plans de ménage et d’attendre des conseils.

Notre principale histoire de ce matin provient d’un rapport précédemment secret découvert grâce à une demande d’accès à l’information qui révèle un aperçu de l’état d’esprit des soldats d’élite australiens. Le rapport met en garde le ministre de la Défense, Richard Marles, contre des problèmes de moral majeurs et une « forte » demande de services de soutien en santé mentale. Il indique que certains membres de l’élite australienne Special Air Service Regiment ont exprimé « leur colère et leur chagrin » face à la situation.
Certaines parties des côtes du Territoire du Nord et de l’ouest de l’Australie sont préparées aux conditions météorologiques extrêmes alors qu’une dépression tropicale s’approfondissait au-dessus de la mer de Timor. Le Bureau de météorologie a émis un avertissement de cyclone hier après-midi, indiquant que la dépression pourrait se transformer en cyclone tropical vendredi matin avant de traverser la côte près de la frontière WA-NT. Cela fait suite à une violente tempête à Victoria jeudi qui a forcé la fermeture partielle de l’aéroport de Melbourne la nuit dernière. Plus de 5 000 clients se sont retrouvés sans électricité, principalement dans la banlieue ouest de Melbourne.
Nous rendons également compte aujourd’hui du difficile Noël à venir pour les personnes vivant sur demandeur d’emploi face à la crise du coût de la vie. Nous parlons à Justin Seymour, 28 ans, qui fait partie des quelque 3,3 millions de personnes en Australie, dont 761 000 enfants, qui passeront probablement Noël dans la pauvreté, selon une récente étude de l’UNSW. Chiffres d’aujourd’hui de Homelessness Australia montrent que l’inflation a déclenché une augmentation du nombre d’Australiens à la recherche d’un soutien aux sans-abrisme, les Tasmaniens étant les plus touchés par la crise du logement. Environ 8 400 personnes supplémentaires ont accédé aux services d’aide aux sans-abri en 2021/22 par rapport à l’exercice précédent, ce qui représente une augmentation de 9,2 %.
Un plafond sur le prix du gaz pour faire face à la hausse des coûts de l’énergie est entré en vigueur aujourd’hui. Des mesures plafonnant l’essence à 12 dollars le gigajoule pendant 12 mois ont commencé après avoir été approuvées par la trésorière par intérim, Katy Gallagher, du jour au lendemain. Le Parlement fédéral a été rappelé la semaine dernière pour adopter la législation sur le plafond temporaire, à la suite d’un accord entre le Premier ministre, Anthony Albanese, et les dirigeants des États et des territoires au sein du cabinet national. Le plafonnement des prix s’appliquera aux nouveaux contrats nationaux de vente en gros de gaz par les producteurs de la côte est.
