Roberto Fico Takes the Helm in Campania, Pledging Ethics and Social Justice
Naples – Roberto Fico was officially declared the new President of the Campania Region this morning, following a proclamation by Giulio Cataldi, President of the Regional Central Bureau at the Court of Appeal. Fico, representing the Five Star Movement, immediately outlined a vision centered on ethical governance and a renewed focus on the region’s most vulnerable citizens.
“This is a pivotal moment,” Fico stated, “The clear mandate from the people carries a great responsibility. We will be guided by a commitment to public ethics in every decision, every appointment, every procedure, ensuring justice for all across Campania.”
Fico emphasized a collaborative approach, promising a new level of civic participation. “We will work with all constructive forces, ensuring everyone feels included, even those who feel marginalized. We will champion social and environmental justice, together, for all the citizens of Campania.”
A New Regional Council & Healthcare Priority
Responding to questions from reporters, Fico indicated a deliberate approach to forming the new regional council. “We won’t rush this process. Quality and the active involvement of political forces are paramount. We will strive for the best possible balance to effectively govern Campania.” He confirmed that no unelected candidates or those who failed to secure a seat will be appointed to the council, reinforcing the legitimacy of the elected representatives.
A key priority for the new administration will be healthcare. Fico announced he will personally oversee the Health delegation, stating, “The public healthcare system is of immense importance. We must invest in our local infrastructure, which is currently lacking.”
Cordial Transition & Tackling Corruption
While a formal handover ceremony with outgoing President Vincenzo De Luca didn’t take place, Fico revealed a “very cordial” phone call with De Luca on Monday, filled with well wishes and discussion of the transition.
Fico also addressed the critical issue of corruption, acknowledging concerning data. “This is a problem that worries me, and we must combat it relentlessly, not just in Campania, but across the entire country. We have work to do to improve our record and eradicate this issue. The Region will implement every possible measure to achieve this.”
Bagnoli Regeneration & Institutional Collaboration
On the same day demolition work began at the Bagnoli site, Fico expressed strong support for the project, praising the acceleration of work under Manfredi. “Restoring the beach and the sea to the citizens is a major priority for our future.” He also signaled a desire for improved relations with the City of Naples, particularly regarding the Bagnoli-Coroglio area, slated to host the 2027 America’s Cup. “I am confident that a serious and constructive dialogue with all institutions – municipalities, the regional government, and the national government – is possible and essential.”
Standing Firm Against Regional Autonomy
Fico reiterated his firm opposition to differentiated regional autonomy, stating, “If this path continues, we will continue to fight it. It would be detrimental to the citizens of Campania and the South, and to the very fabric of our Republic.”
Immediate Action & Focus on the Vulnerable
Immediately following the proclamation, Fico visited the inauguration of a listening center for victims of crime at the Naples Palace of Justice. “It’s vital that no one is left behind, that everyone feels heard. I want to be a president who listens to those who feel their voices are ignored.”
He also announced a trip to Caserta to present the Caritas Poverty Report, promising a “minimum income for all and a housing plan, because public housing is fundamental and must be managed effectively. Combating poverty and inequality will be a top priority.” He also touched on immigration, stating it “enriches our society” and pledged to explore ways to support municipalities in integrating newcomers.
A Symbolic Handover & Commitment to Gender Equality
Concluding the day, Fico received the emblem of the city of Naples from Mayor Gaetano Manfredi at a presentation of the city’s anti-violence table. He underscored the importance of addressing gender-based violence, stating, “We must invest in women’s economic empowerment and cultivate a culture free from chauvinism. There is still a long road ahead.”
