Negative Inflation Rate Marked for First Time Since 2021

Negative Inflation Rate Marked for First Time Since 2021

The -0,41 % deflation in June 2026 represents the first such decline since December 2021, according to Testachats’ July 3 report. The organization attributes the drop to falling food prices and transport costs. “This is a significant shift from the previous trend,” the statement reads.

Drop in Food and Transport Prices Drives Deflation

The consumer price index fell to -0,41 % in June, down from +0,2 % in May. This marks the first negative reading since the pandemic-induced contraction in 2021. “Basic goods prices dropped 1,2 %, while energy costs stabilized,” the report states. Airfare reductions, linked to increased international flight capacity, also contributed to the decline.

Weak Consumer Demand and Stable Housing Costs Highlight Economic Contrasts

Analysts note weak demand in luxury sectors and services. “Households are cutting non-essential spending, pressuring prices,” says a source quoted in *Le Monde Économique*. Housing prices remained stable, with less than 0,1 % fluctuation. Annual inflation stands at +1,8 %, though the monthly rate’s negativity reflects a seasonal correction, per Testachats.

Government Hails Deflation as Opportunity, Unions Warn of Wage Stagnation

The Ministry of Economy called the deflation “an opportunity to boost consumption,” adding that “monetary policy must remain cautious.” A spokesperson emphasized the need for “prudent measures.” Unions, however, criticized the gap between falling prices and stagnant wages. The CGT stated, “Price drops are not offset by improved salaries.” Retailers report a 0,7 % margin decline in Q2.

Testachats Projects Mild Inflation Rise in July Amid Global Uncertainties

Testachats forecasts +0,1 % inflation for July, citing “renewed demand from festivals and cultural events.” Yet global market volatility and interest rates remain risks. “Policymakers must stay vigilant against commodity price swings,” the report warns. Key data due July 31 will determine if the trend holds.

L’inflation négative de juin 2026 marque un tournant temporaire, mais les économistes soulignent que des mesures structurelles seront nécessaires pour stabiliser les prix à long terme.
